Bloomed Life & Utah Flower Farm

Title: Flower Production & Retail Assistant

Hours: Part-Time or Full-Time available

Wage: $19/hr

Start Date: May 29th

We are hiring a Flower Production & Retail Assistant to assist with our seasonal rose growing and boutique sales. Hourly pay is $19/hr. Bloomed Life is an inclusive, woman-owned floral business and is the sister company to Utah Flower Farm. Our mission is to provide high-quality, fragrant, locally grown roses from our farm in Holladay to our storefront in Salt Lake, where we sell primarily to florists.

This position is ideal for someone interested in learning about cut flower production or looking to expand one's experience in floristry, agriculture, or horticulture. This position offers wide exposure to both fields, from maintaining healthy plants to harvesting, processing, customer outreach, and order fulfillment. Utah Flower Farm is Utah's largest rose farm; growing over 12,000 plants and 100 varieties of fragrant garden roses. While flower farming seems like romantic work, the reality is that farm work and retail sales are not always glamorous.

One should expect hard, physical work mulching, planting, weeding, harvesting, repeatedly lifting 50lbs, and cleaning and maintaining equipment. In addition, one can expect to make cold calls, keep records, make arrangements, and fulfill orders. We strive to give each customer an exceptional experience, whether we chat in person or by phone.

We're looking for somebody who absolutely loves plants and people. The ideal candidate should thrive working in the snow and/or blistering heat, even when it means being bent over or lifting heavy things for hours on end. They are equally delighted to gush over roses with our community and will bend over backward to make our guests happy. We have a small team of fast-brained, big-hearted individuals that we're incredibly proud of - and we're looking to hire someone who's just as committed as we are.

The season begins in May and ends in October. We are flexible with students who must return to school in August, and those who are only able to work part-time. Weekend availability is required. The shifts would vary depending on whether work is needed at the farm or at the store. Farm shifts run from 6:30am - 3pm, while the store shift is from 9:45am - 3:10pm. The farm operates daily while the store is open Tuesday - Saturday. The location for our farm is in Holladay, while our retail store is located on 2150 S Main St. Ground level unit. The candidate must be willing (and happy) to travel to both locations.

Utah Flower Farm duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Watering, which is often in the sun for up to 7 hours at a time (audiobooks and music are encouraged!)
  • Deadheading (being bent over for several hours at a time, then raking and sorting)
  • Weeding
  • Digging holes and replanting
  • Reorganizing heavy pots
  • Learning the basics of IPM and reporting any symptoms/issues to your manager
  • Harvesting & processing flowers
  • Practicing excellent cooler care and flower bucket maintenance
  • Working to understand each variety's characteristics (stem length and strength, longevity, fragrance, color change, abundance, time from bud to bloom, etc.)
  • Laying and removing mulching materials, which includes lifting heavy straw bales, crawling on hands and knees, shoveling heavy material, and sometimes working in the snow for long periods of time.
  • Operating small-scale farm equipment (tractor, atv, golf cart, etc.)
  • Upkeep of barns and buildings (cleaning toilets, sweeping, etc.)
  • Maintenance of farm equipment and systems, including irrigation lines, high-pressure water pipes, faulty wiring, valves, etc.
  • Handling customer outreach and all communications for retail orders and markets.
  • Assisting wholesale and walk-in customers with in-store order pickups
  • Creating floral arrangements
  • Driving a van (carefully) to deliver flowers
  • Participating in community events as needed
  • Operating with a flexible schedule and the awareness that roses need daily care
  • Going above and beyond in any way possible to ensure plant health and customer satisfaction

Bloomed Life duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping customers understand the shopping process, value proposition, and floral care
  • Adding new product inventory from farms (accurate, following method)
  • Checking out retail stem bar customers on Shopify (web-based platform)
  • Refilling and caring for inventory on the store floor and in the cooler
  • Fulfilling multi-farm orders and maintaining inventory on Gather Flora (web-based platform)
  • Managing incoming inventory (sold and unsold) from collective farms
  • Fulfilling orders (verifying correct count and varieties) with customers
  • Keeping the store clean, storage organized, and displays looking fresh
  • Producing high-quality photos and videos for social media (daily)
  • Creating an exceptional experience for our guests, which requires integrity (being on time, keeping commitments), working hard, commitment to serving others, creating artistic displays with flowers, keeping organized, good time management, and accountability in taking full leadership of the store
