General Statement of Job
Facilitate the link between school and community in providing services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students’ academic and social success.
Required education and experience
• North Carolina Licensure – School Social Worker (0006).
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate or acceptable.
Essential duties and responsibilities
• Develop intervention strategies to increase academic success.
• Help students develop appropriate social interaction skills.
• Provide crisis intervention and assist with conflict resolution and emotional regulation.
• Team with school staff to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health) affecting a student’s performance and behavior.
• Assist with the development of plans to support mental health and behavioral concerns.
• Provide staff in-service training on social emotional learning and social work related services.
• Provide social work case management for students and families requiring multiple resources and interventions.
• Gather and manage data that will promote goal setting and problem solving at student, school, and district level.
• Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
• Connect with families to facilitate their child’s school engagement and attendance.
• Interview families to assess problems affecting child’s education adjustment.
• Serve as McKinney Vento school liaison.
• Promote awareness within the school and district of community resources and school social work services.
• Partner to obtain, coordinate, and improve community resources to meet student and family needs.
• Assist the district in receiving adequate support from social and mental health agencies.

Essential knowledge and abilities
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Ability to respond appropriately to crisis situations.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions (written and verbal).
• Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children and social work.
• General knowledge of adapting instruction, equipment, and tools for students with behavioral or social-emotional learning needs.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by working assignments.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely (written and verbal); ability to communicate with school personnel, students, and parents while complying with the confidentiality requirement in local, state, and federal policies and statutes.
• Speak to individuals or groups of people competently.
• Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints to build customer focus.
• Apply principles of logic or scientific reasoning to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
• Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
• Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as walk, lift, stoop, stand, kneel, grasp, crouch, and required repetitive motions.
• Physical ability to lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibilities.
• Position is contingent of finishing all required duties and may involve minimal extended employment beyond the school year.
• Ability to travel between school sites.
• Knowledge of positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices.
