Job Description

The Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is currently seeking a full-time Zoologist to provide world-class animal care to a wide variety of species, with a focus on our large carnivores (tigers, jaguars, black bears), avian (psittacines, waterfowl, birds of prey), primates (callitrichids, spiders, capuchins) and small mammal collection. We are in the process of re-imagining our beautiful tropical Zoo, and are looking to bring in new expertise and enthusiasm. The Zoo staff work in a positive, team-oriented environment to support our mission to inspire people to act on behalf of wildlife. Zoologists promote increased environmental awareness and conservation through excellent animal care and management practices, coupled with positive visitor experiences.



Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize assigned animal enclosures
  • Prepare and feed out approved diets
  • Store and administer medications according to USDA standards and the prescriptions issued by veterinary staff
  • Fill out daily records
  • Communicate safety and health concerns to appropriate staff
  • Participate in preventative medicine programs including whole of life plans, fecal collection and submission, immobilization of animals for physical exams and regular weight checks
  • Assist in the capture and restraint of collection animals for transfer and veterinary procedures when necessary
  • Participate in behavioral management initiatives including animal training and enrichment of assigned animals
  • Perform hand rearing of neonates including overnight care as assigned
  • Organize and maintain adequate stocks of supplies and keep equipment in good repair
  • Conduct rounds of assigned section(s) at beginning and end of each shift (checking animals, access to water/ heat and locks)
  • Contribute to exhibit concept design and collection planning discussions
  • Review detailed design documents for animal husbandry requirements as needed
  • Look for opportunities to improve efficiency and excellence in animal care
  • Participate in Drills and Emergency Response and provide feedback on the experience
  • Perform exhibit talks as scheduled and assigned
  • Initiate informal talks and encounters
  • Participate in educational programs as assigned
  • Take part in research, document and present information when opportunities are available
  • Take opportunities to improve guest experience both as an individual and as an institution including the zoo’s safety procedures, visitor services and general appearance
  • Serve as a representative to the media as assigned
  • Handle program animals for events and encounters
